Concorde Hotel KL Buka Puasa Buffet 2013


The month of Ramadan/ festivities of Hari Raya is up and coming, and we have loads of bazaars and buffets to look forward to here in Malaysia! :)
Many hotels and restaurants usually have a special menu or buffet spread just for this time of the year, and it's definitely something you wouldn't want to miss. At least for me. I love to eat Malay food! :)

One of the many hotels participating in special Ramadan lineups is Concorde Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. Their theme for this year is "Warung Nasi Padang Ibunda", focusing on home-style authentic Padang fare. The guest chefs hired specially for the occasion includes a family who have learnt the art of cooking since young in their home in West Sumatra (where Padang cuisine is widespread). Padang food is known for its rich taste of coconut milk and spicy chili.


However, Concorde Hotel's spread this year does not only cover Padang dishes. There are numerous Malay dishes as part of the buffet, some international dishes as well as Chinese food. The buffet layout is such that food is at all four corners of the ballroom! They actually converted a ballroom for the buffet because their cafe is unable to hold such a high capacity.

Let's take a look at what they're offering in 2013!




 

Despite the focus mainly being Malay food, there is a spread of international favorites such as Oysters and some boiled seafood. I didn't have any of them (saving space for the star dishes!), but my friends enjoyed the seared tuna a lot.


Suiting the theme, kerabu and ulam made a strong appearance for the appitizers and I tried to sample most of it! :)
Some of the kerabu includes: Kerabu Udang Thai, Kerabu ayam berkerisik, Kerabu Isi Kerang, Kerabu Hati, Kerabu Mangga, Kerabu Taugeh.. etc

The kerabu spread was definitely the most eye-catching.

Most people can't handle this pungent and very spicy Malay styled salad, but if you can, most likely you'll love it. I like their budu sauce a lot.



For me, I liked the kerabu mangga most (bottom right) as it had a very nice sour tang and bite to the seasoned mangoes. Really whets your appetite! The isi kerang, however, is a bit more bland than it looks. The prawn kerabu was pretty yummy.

Go for the beef. ;)



 Live action noodles, popiah, roast whole lamb carving...


Chinese corner

The Padang spread, with some dishes including:
Gulai Lomak Cili Padi, Ayam Rendang Minang, Udang Kelio, Gulai Kambing, Paru Dendeng, Kelio Ayam Nangka, etc.


Local Malay curries to soak up your rice!


Bryani rice, very orangey and colorful with dried fruits and nuts.

Giant impressive-looking Garouper curry

My pick: Daging Dendeng Balado.
Dried-fried flattened beef with pounded chili paste. The contrast of textures is good with this one!
The meat is very crispy and the chili paste provides a nice, smooth covering. Eat it with rice. :D

My pick: Udang Gulai Paku
The gravy was very sweet from the prawns, creamy from the use of Coconut Santan(milk) and I love Paku Pakis vegetables (forest ferns).


My pick: Soto Padang
When I was taking photos, the chef was telling me this dish was a MUST-have.
It tasted good though! The broth was full of spices and had that earthy, meaty sort of taste with a sourish tang. Goes well with that orange chili paste pictured.


Desserts


Free-flow drinks. Sugarcane juice, Susu Bandung and Soya Milk.
I find the Susu Bandung and Soya Milk too sweet. Do go for the sugarcane juice!


The desserts are pretty to look at, but taste OK-ok.
My advice is to fill yourself with the mains instead. ;)


The brown ball was the best of the desserts (for me).
My pick: Godok Batinta
Banana fritters served with palm sugar. These were very addictive! :)
