Christmas Wish List

It’s that time of the year, and a barrage of frantic minds rush toward the unambiguous message of a posted advertisement: the fat man in an iconic red suit, promising the notion of peace, love and happiness in a perfectly packaged box of trinkets.
Recession is but a passing phase, and we are gladly forgiven for having splurged on this special occasion.

After all, the fat man does promise peace, love and happiness in that perfectly packaged box of trinkets… right?
Right.
The more you purchase, the better your chances of achieving said miracles… right?
Right.

So we float in a flourish of wonder and delight, relinquishing the possibility of simply overspending on pretty uncertainty.

Love is officially bought.

And so this is Christmas. The streets of the world are filled with shoppers, guilt stricken only for not spending enough money on their loved ones.
They ignore the fact that 80% of shops are no longer branded by the designers’ names, but by the four-lettered word starkly splashed against the otherwise ideal glass frames that divide fantasy from reality.
They ignore the fact that this four-lettered word spells more than trouble; it reflects the current economy crisis that has spread around the world like used gum beneath a dirty heel.
They ignore the facts to indulge in the fall of our time, to buy simply because the tag read 30% discount on regular price merchandise.
True, their naivety only helps dawdle our inevitable downfall, but to what extent does the cycle turn?

Next year is declared a bad year.
Property prices have fallen to ensure good sales, retrenchment has become the latest fashion (It hasn’t hit Malaysia just yet), and beggar-resembled clothes are spilling onto the catwalk.

Take the old to reinvent the new, upcycle the unworn to prepare for… well, the new.
